This sculpture would be an enlarged version of the Schnellen Chart that is used in optometrist offices all over the world. Each letter in this work would be exactly the same size. Spacing the letters further and further apart will create the illusion of a decrease in size. From one specific vantage point, the letters will all align and form an accurate depiction of the Schnellen Chart.

Words can't describe the amazingness that is Sacred and Profane. This word-of-mouth event places art in the context of an abandoned WWII-era army bunker tucked discreetly in the center of the beautiful Peaks Island Land Preserve on Peaks Island, Maine. Alicia and I installed "You are (on) an island." in a flooded room at the center of the battery.

Thanks to every single person that put time and effort into making the 2011 Sacred and Profane the mind-blowing and beautiful experience that it was. Super-huge thanks to Patrick Bolduc at Beacon Neon for the construction and installation of the neon letters. Thanks to Tom and Nick for the long, wet hours they put in to construct the scaffolding. And thanks to Jeff Stockbridge for his help de-installing the piece.

Right now, Eternity is in a show called "O'Clock" at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, Italy. Alicia and I flew out to install the piece last week and had an amazing experience. Ryan showed me this piece yesterday, and I love it. I like how it all comes together in the end- that you learn the images are zooming out, yet the perspective and scale still seem to flitter back and forth, making the images seem unrelated and incongruous. I also love the satisfaction of, once figuring it out, starting from the bottom and going back up, zooming back in, trying to decipher the areas that are depicted.

Hot Dog Day

Many towns have their strange little festivals, and Alfred is no exception.

"Hot Dog Day is celebrated in the spring in the village of Alfred, New York. It has been celebrated since 1972, when students first proposed it.[4] The event is focused on the hot dog, a food popular among college students for its cheapness and ease of preparation. Hot Dog Day itself is usually the third Saturday in April, although many students celebrate the entire "hot dog week", running from that Wednesday to that Sunday.

Hot Dog Day, which is organized primarily by students from Alfred University and Alfred State College, raises money for local charities and community organizations, such as Alfred's fire department and Montessori school.[5]

Events typically include a parade, ice cream social, "fun run", mud Olympics, hot dog eating contests, carnival and live music. Main Street, which is closed to traffic, hosts most of these activities, along with food choices such as a chicken barbecue and numerous hot dog stands. Hot Dog Day is often the time chosen for alumni reunions for Alfred's two colleges."

In honor of the event, Silicon Gallery (139 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia) held a juried competition, and my work was selected to be in the exhibit that opens this Friday, March 5th. I wish I could be there for the opening- some one take some photos for me!

Chosen For Graphic Intersections v. 02

I am extremely excited to be a part of The Exposure Project's second installment of Graphic Intersections, the exquisite-corpse, whisper-down-the-lane style Photo project. Learn more at The Exposure Project, or read below:

Graphic Intersections, loosely inspired by the old Surrealist and Dadaist game Exquisite Corpse, is a project that will attempt to unite disparate artists in an interconnected, photographic relay of images inspired by one another. For those unfamiliar with Exquisite Corpse, it is succinctly described here:

"Among Surrealist techniques exploiting the mystique of accident was a kind of collective collage of words or images called the cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse). Based on an old parlor game, it was played by several people, each of whom would write a phrase on a sheet of paper, fold the paper to conceal part of it, and pass it on to the next player for his contribution."

Essentially, this is how Graphic Intersections works. We will collect submissions from interested photographers until January 5th, at which point we will select the participating artists and designate one of these photographers to start the whole thing off. The first photographer will be given a prompting word to work from and will subsequently make photographs inspired by this idea. They will send us their favorite and most representative image from this session which we will then send along to the next artist. The succeeding artist, based solely on their visual, emotional, intellectual, or philosophical response, will in turn make photographs in artistic reaction to the one they were given. The artists involved will not be given any written material to accompany the photograph, nor will they know whose image they're responding to. This is designed to propagate randomness and avoid preconceived biases. This process will continue until the chain has been completed.

There are a few stipulations with the Graphic Intersections project. Firstly, participating photographers will be required to shoot, develop/import and submit their chosen image in no more than 2 weeks. I realize that this does not leave a tremendous amount of time to carry out this process. However, in the interest of completing this venture in under a year it seems necessary to instate a time frame. Secondly, chosen photographers will have to exercise a certain amount of patience and trust in the process, as there will be 20 artists each with a two week time slot. Lastly, images submitted for this project must be taken specifically for Graphic Intersections. Each photographer must submit a new image which does exist in a previously constructed body of work.

At the end of the term, the foundation classes at Alfred University put on this amazing event called "Tableau Vivant."

The words Tableau Vivant roughly translate to living picture and usually refer to a live re-enactment of a work of art. For your final project of Fall semester Foundations you will each collaborate to create a Tableau Vivant that is inspired by a work of art. The event will take place on December 7th at 7pm in Holmes. make sure to invite friends and family… it’s usually an amazingly fun event!

It was amazing! Each group moved frantically to position their backdrops and props- mostly made on fabric or cardboard. After a brief introduction by a member of the group, the lights would dim, music would start playing, and a short little skit was acted out. The actors would eventually freeze in the position necessary to create the closest replica of the artwork, which would suddenly appear projected on the upper right on the auditorium screen. After the pause and applause, they would quickly close out their skit and then scramble to break down while the next group set up.

I was super impressed at the effort that went into the performances. I'm sure so many art lovers would get a kick out of this event, and I'm curious if similar events occur regularly elsewhere. Here are a few snapshots:

I have been collaborating with my partner, Alicia Eggert. One of our first projects was "A Trailing Off Into Silence," a short-term outdoor installation made with maple leaves infected by the fungus Rhytisma.

Our next piece was a site specific installtion at the Random Room Gallery in donwton Alfred, NY entitled "A Grand Opening For Gravity." It consisted of a false ceiling out of which over 400 feet of multi-colored triangle pennant flags dropped through a small hole. The flags slowly formed a large pile on the gallery floor over the period of 4 hours. In close proximity, a wall-mounted unit framed an endlessly scrolling string of flags bathed in an eerie fluorescent light.
